Looking Back at Christmas
By Carlos Vasquez

The word "Christmas" originated as a compound word meaning "Christ's Mass." It should be clear that Christmas is about the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Christmas is celebrated for many Christians in many different ways. Even though they are different, all Christians agree that the birth of Christ is the most important aspect of Christmas.

This was my first Christmas in the United States. It was very similar to how we celebrate Christmas in my country of Mexico. The consistencies are that Christmas is always a time to reconnect with family and Jesus.

Many of our students coincided with this in their opinions of what Christmas has meant to them:
Katy Mitchell - "Going to church a lot."
Jordyn Lee - "Spending more time with my family."
Brenda Perez - "Knowing that everyone feels good with the Christmas spirit."

Winter Week of Prayer
By Brenda Perez

Because we are a Christian school, we take a whole week and dedicate it to worshipping God with special daily meetings with a guest speaker. This year, we had our week of prayer during the Christmas season.

Mrs. Maria Long was our speaker; she is the wife of Ryan Long, pastor of Bonnerdale SDA church. Mrs. Long is a Christian recording artist and her ministry focuses on youth.

Mrs. Long's topics were diverse and heartfelt. On the first day, she talked about "selfishness" and how this Christmas we should be giving. On the second day, she talked about "pride" and how we are all equal. Instead of being proud we should be loving in nature. On the third day, she spoke about emotions and sins that leave us feeling "dirty." She stated that if we feel dirty, we should ask God to cleanse us. That day, she sang her song "Inside." This song talks about even when we feel dirty, sad, mad, hate, etc., God will help us to be clean.

Next, Mrs. Long focused on being "scared" with illustrations from the life of Peter. Peter famously and miraculously walked on water; eventually though he became scared. Taking his eyes off Jesus, he began to sink. Yet, it was at this tumultuous event that Jesus saved Peter and kept him from sinking into the deep. Mrs. Long said that if we are scared, God is always there. so pray and He will be with you.

On the last day (Friday), the talk was about "choices." She used a creative illustration; she asked all of the students if they wanted a cookie. The price of the cookie was free monetarily, but Mrs. Long would have to do five pushups for every cookie eaten by a student. Every student ironically wanted a cookie which meant lots of pushups for poor Mrs. Long. The preschoolers and then Mr. Hall's class gladly ate their cookies while Mrs. Long did her pushups. By the time that Mr. Swinyar's class came along for their cookie though, Mrs. Long was in obvious pain from all of the pushups that she had to do. The cookie was a simple gift paid for by someone else with pushups.

Mrs. Long's point was clearly understood by everyone. Jesus gives us the gift of eternal life, but it didn't cost Him simple pushups - it cost Him His life.

Mrs. Long inspired all of the students of Hot Springs Adventist School. We were blessed to have her message.

Garvan Gardens Field Trip
By Brigitte Goslee

On December 15, the students of HSAS went on a field trip to Garvan Woodland Gardens. The upper graders took along their sketching journals and got to sketch some of the waterfalls. Mr. Hall's class walked around the park and had a lot of fun playing in the new children's area. We all had so much fun and can't wait to go again.
